Do I have to go out for Halloween?

This time of year is my absolute favourite. From Thanksgiving all the way to Christmas it always makes me happy to be alive and thankful for all the people surrounding me that share in my memories. I am that kind of Mom that has a box of decorations for every seasonal holiday. So from the time the kids were little pumpkins and friendly ghosts, bats and black cats sauntered into our space. I was always careful not to over do it because the extra visual stimulation would sometimes make for some unrest. It was bad enough that from October 1st all the kids were talking about costumes and dressing up and the excitement just filled the air; as it still does today.

For our household Halloween was always a shot in the dark as to whether or not Sydney would go trick or treating. Every year for the most part she picks out a costume and dresses up in the house for days before Halloween. Taking the costume to school was another story. Usually, I would buy a shirt with a Halloween theme that she could wear so she’s participating but in a less noticeable style.

The question that I got asked this year was, “Do I HAVE to go out for Halloween?” No, I don’t think anyone HAS to go out for Halloween but if you want to and if you feel like you want to go out just to a house or two that’s fine. No one HAS to go out. It’s a tricky event because she has so many food allergies grabbing candy is rather disappointing because she can’t eat most of it. She sits on the floor with her brother and trades all of her stuff for three chocolates – Aero, KitKat or Smarties. That’s it!

So this year the kids had an idea. We are working through some trauma therapy work with our son and Sydney has her anxiety about the season so they both talked it through and decided that neither one of them are going to go out. Instead this was their proposal:

Halloween Family Celebration

  • Carve pumpkins the night before
  • Order Pizza for dinner
  • Turn off all the lights and not give out any candy
  • Get into PJ’s
  • Watch some Halloween movies all snuggled up together
  • Make some goody bags for their friends in the neighbourhood so they can have a treat
  • Spend Halloween together as a family warm and snuggly in our house

I have to say that I am more than okay with that idea, especially because they made the connection that as fun as it is to go out for Halloween it’s also fun to greet others at the door with treats.  On the weekend we picked up some candy for the kids and together packed up little packages of sweet goodness for all of them. We’ve got labels on the bags and the kids will deliver them earlier in the evening to all of their friends. So they are still engaged with the festivities but it’s their way of taking on the season this year.

So however you participate in Halloween enjoy and have a Boo-riffic Halloween.

When witches go riding,
and black cats are seen,
the moon laughs and whispers,
‘tis near Halloween.

What’s in your “toolbox”

I’ve got a great blog post at S-O-S Research today. I am talking about our “toolbox” and a great book that I have recently rediscovered; Your Anxious Child: How Parents and Teachers Can Relieve Anxiety in Children by John S. Dacey and Lisa B. Fiore. If you have a chance head on over and check out the full article.

“Too many times we stand aside and let the waters slip away, till what we put off till tomorrow has now become today. So don’t you sit upon the shoreline and say you’re satisfied. Choose to chance the rapids and dare to dance the tide.” (Source: Thinkexist.com)

Books on Anxiety

Over the years I have had plenty of books suggested to me about how to raise my anxious child. Some have been full of wonderful information and helped me have those aha moments while others, well – others left me slightly confused and feeling a little scared about the future for both my child and myself.

Then there are the books I have mulled through over the course of the years, but at the time I found that the content wasn’t appropriate for us. All of the strategies were for children older than ours and the concepts were a little out of reach.

Do you know when your child has had enough?

Slow down and everything you are chasing will come around and catch you. ~John De Paola

I love this quote because it completely encapsulates last night and this morning. We have had an extraordinary week. Sydney got the award, she completed three tests in three days and I heard that she worked so hard on all of them, she had a supply teacher for Wednesday and Thursday, she played outside with the neighbouring kids taking herself out of her comfort zone many times. She’s just spent 5 days doing amazing things. So does it surprise me that yesterday morning she woke up crying and begging me to have a rest because she was just “so tired”? Not at all. Does it surprise me that I had to help her with every task yesterday morning in order to get her out the door? Not at all. Do you want to know what does surprise me?

She was in such a state yesterday morning that I thought for sure I would not be able to get her out the door but we did. I was sure that when we got to school she would not go into the classroom because there was a supply teacher, but after a quick talk with the teacher to inform her of her hesitance and tears and she did. She didn’t want to go to school today because she wanted a break but she had a celebration for the good work that they’ve done and that was a tricky situation for her to manoeuvre around but she did and with a smile on none the less.

The quote that I found this morning reminds us that you don’t have to be going warp speed in order to find some amazing things. Yes, eventually all of these amazing things that Sydney has done will become just second nature but for now having a week full of such success also means that the physical effort on her body has been extreme. This is how I know when my child has had enough.

Physical Signs:

  • Bags under the eyes
  • Tripping over their own two feet
  • Fidgety
  • Inability to concentrate
  • Crying

Verbal Cues:

  • Stuttering
  • Aggressive talking back
  • Negative self talk

Everyone’s breaking point is different and everyone’s tolerance for stress is innately different too so it is absolutely critical that I acknowledge and address these signs that a “break” is in order. What that “break” consists of will fluctuate depending on the circumstances but it is up to us as parents to realize just how much effort goes into these successes. So tonight perhaps we watch a movie with popcorn and lots of snuggles, maybe in the morning breakfast in bed might be in order. Whatever we decide the idea is to slow things down, to bring a sense of tranquillity and peace back into her overly sensitive nervous system. To recap the week and put into perspective all the achievements and it is my pleasure to do that because she is so worth it.

What are your child’s signs of overwhelming stress?

And the award goes to…

The most glorious moments in your life are not the so-called days of success, but rather those days when out of dejection and despair you feel rise in you a challenge to life, and the promise of future accomplishments.
Gustave Flaubert

What a fantastic surprise and just in time for mental health awareness week. Sydney came home yesterday with an award. Every month the school has what they call a “WOW” assembly where they give out “WOW” awards. These are awards for students that they feel have put considerable effort into their school work. Well, guess who got the award for “Most improved musician”? You guessed it, none other than my daughter.

The look of satisfaction when she saw me in the school yard was phenomenal. To see her eye wide with pride, her skip, literally in her step and the shrill of excitement when she was telling me what the award was for. Now, the kids are supposed to go up to the front of the assembly where they all take a picture and that was a little too much to ask for but she did get the award and it was quite the moment. I don’t think anyone quite understood the magnitude of accomplishment that she felt. What a great way to move her forward.

Mental Health Awareness Week from the world of an artist

You gain strength, courage, and confidence by every experience in which you really stop to look fear in the face. You are able to say to yourself, ‘I lived through this horror. I can take the next thing that comes along.
Eleanor Roosevelt

It is with great pleasure that I introduce to you a friend of mine and a wonderful artist. Karen Levangie has got talent and she is using her talent and her energy to help benefit a mental health charity during mental health awareness week. Karen find inspiration from her life and her artwork shows her struggles and triumphs.

One piece that struck me as I was looking at her portfolio was a piece called, “Family/Happy Place”. Karen describes it like this:
“Viewed vertically, it represents anger i was feeling towards my family at that given moment. when i turned it horizontally, it reminded me of a happy place, like an underwater scene. I realized that family actually can be both, a source of anger and a place to find happiness.”

Isn’t that so indicative of life isn’t it. Life is quite often all about perception. We find happiness and sadness and a host of other emotions all around us. It’s having the courage to work through all of those feelings and to create such works of beauty at the other end. I admire Karen for sharing her thoughts and feelings with us on canvas and letting the depth and breath of her being come to life and create a world all unto itself; telling a story, capturing a moment, finding peace where there is chaos. Keep creating and expressing yourself through your artwork because it is truly amazing.

Now let’s have Karen tell you a little bit about herself.

An estimated 26.2 percent of the population ages 18 and older – about one in four adults – suffer from a diagnosable mental illness in any given year. However, stigma surrounding mental illness is a major barrier that prevents people from seeking the mental health treatment that they need. Programs during Mental Illness Awareness Week are designed to create community awareness and discussion in an effort to put an end to stigma and advocate for treatment and recovery.

I myself suffer from several different mental illnesses. Depression, Anxiety, Borderline Personality Disorder, Passive/Aggressive Personality Disorder, and I think I am also forgetting a few, LOL. Because of this, I decided that during MIAW, which falls in the second week of my Fall Sale (October 2-8, 2011), I will be donating 10% of total sales to mental health research. I have not yet decided which charity yet, but will post my decision in the next few days, as well as total raised at the end of the week. Please help fight the stigma of mental illness and help support those of us who suffer with them by purchasing one of my paintings.
