Go Away, Mr. Worrythoughts! Contest

Front cover of Go Away Mr. Worrythoughts

It is a brand new year and a great time to introduce a wonderful set of books by a very talented author named, “Nicky Johnson”. I had the pleasure of connecting with Nicky to talk to her about her amazing books. She was kind enough to offer us both “Go Away, Mr. Worrythoughts!” and “Happythoughts are Everywhere” so you know what that means….CONTEST TIME!!!!

Nicky has done a magnificent job of both writing these books and illustrating them. She shows us tools and tips at the end of each book that encourage kids to manage and overcome their anxiety.

Go Away, Mr. Worrythoughts is about:

Bayden is an intellient, confident and courageous boy. Yet his is worry thoughts can be quite unbearable. See how Bayden discovers his superpowers, takes control and is able to live free and happy!

This simple story has been nicely written and illustrated to help encourage children like Bayden manage and overcome their anxiety.

Happythoughts are Everywhere is about:

These days, Bayden is a happy and confident boy. There was a time, not long ago when Bayden worried about everything, ALL of the time. That was, until he discovered the power of Happythoughts!

Join Bayden’s journey as he goes in search of his happythoughts – you’ll never guess where he finds them!

This clever story has been written and illustrated to help children learn that by changing their thoughts, they can change their feelings. A simple strategy to help children take control of their anxiety!

I can’t tell you how much I think these books are essential for your “Toolbox“. Thanks so much Nicky for giving us a chance to put Happythoughts everywhere.

So if you’d like to have one of these beautiful and inspiring books in your toolbox here’s how to do it.

Ask your child to tell you what they like most about themselves! Share that with us.

Winners will be picked by random draw.

Happy New Year…

To all of the readers of the blog I wish you a healthy and prosperous 2012. I hope that the new year brings new opportunities, new friendship, new clarity and most of all many moments where you are just that, “in the moment”.

Child climbing up a mountain towards success

I have lots of great things planned for 2012 and I wouldn’t have that vision without all of you. Your comments inspire me and make me so happy to have opened my heart and life in order to help you.

2011 was the year of “Change” and 2012 I anticipate will be a “Magical” year. Embrace it, listen to it and follow along with me as we move forward together – “my village” of support wouldn’t be the same without you, thank you.

Let’s celebrate your child GIVEAWAY!!!

I’ve had a number of people over the last few months ask, “How can you be so candid about your life?”, or “Don’t you worry about what your kids think about being a part of all of this?”. Just the other day I also came across a blog post about jsut that, “What will your kids learn” that tackles the same issue.

Well, don’t think that for a minute I haven’t wondered how my blogging and discussions in papers and talks with other parents in the school yard will impact my family. Each blog post I expose the world to is carefully thought out. It is only my intention that through our experiences and new found resources that I too can share with you the hope of parents, neighbours, schools and communities working together for our children to be successful at anything they do. I also hope that when she’s ready and wants to read the entries that she will gain perspective into how much she has accomplished and how many hurdles she has crossed. It is a living journal of her journey.

Sydney on occasion has questioned me about the blog and has seen the pictures of her on here. Although I she doesn’t get the full understanding of what Mom is trying to accomplish I know that she will in fact question my actions more. At what point will I no longer blog about our every day life? The answer when someone in the family is opposed to it and it is no longer comfortable. I have said that from the very beginning. I do hope that before that point happens that I will take this blog to a much greater place. I’m in the midst of finding space to start a support group for parents, I have book ideas, I am now a certified Life Coach and will soon be merging the two facets of life together; my experience parenting anxious children and wellness and life balance.

It takes courage no doubt to show yourself in front of the world and it seems ironic to think that my kids age I was so shy I barely spoke. I wouldn’t even make eye contact with people unless they were relatives and even then was dicey. I advocate more than anything being yourself, promoting your own values while not bulldozing over everyone else. I care about my own kids and all of those children who are misunderstood, made to feel worthless and feel like they can’t even be in their own skin.

I have come a long way in understanding mental health, I have come a long way in healing both myself and my children. You know when you ask why you have been put in a position that is challenging or difficult or seemingly endless and you look up to the sky and ask “why”. This blog is why and all of you wonderful parents who too are looking for answers, reassurance and support I thank you for being strong to share a little piece of your world here with me and on my facebook group. Together we will make changes for our children and our future will be full.

To celebrate all of you, the parents that care so much about your children and your children who need our support I’m giving away a little treat.

Giveaway!!!
I have two books to give away from author Gayle Grass.

Mental Health Awareness Week Contest

Have you ever wondered what it was like for a child to try and fit in when they feel completely out of touch? Have you ever been in the schoolyard and see your child struggling when all of the other kids are free as a bird? Have you ever seen tears in the eyes of a child because they feel like they just can’t do it? Have you ever seen fear in the eyes of child that feels like it is just hopeless?

This week is Mental Health Awareness Week and there is no better time than now to embrace all of those children that struggle with mental health disorders. It’s time to remember that the brain is just as important as any other organ that we hold so dear.

It’s time to take the blinders off and reclaim a sense of dignity and a place for all children. I had intended on talking about mental health awareness week much earlier this week except I got all tripped up in our families internal healing. Sydney’s struggles this week with a shower brought us to a whole new world of finding her voice, expressing her fear and working through it. The whole ordeal though has made for a very hard week for her. Through all of our talking about what is the worry or fear that has you so upset we finally figured out that when she is really tired the thought of having a shower actually scares her. Makes her feel completely out of control. The water is overwhelming, the sound of the shower is overwhelming and even the feel of the cloth on her body makes her quiver. So what do we do? She needs to shower, she needs to clean herself off.  We decided that for that night we would forgo the shower and instead come up with a plan. She recognizes very quickly at the end of the day when she has had enough. She knows instinctually when the day has been too much and she’s done. So she decided that some days instead of a shower she wants a bath – less stimulating. We also figured out that if I give her a day or two warning say it’s Tuesday today in two days you’ll have a shower it will better prepare her for it and if she’s not feeling 100% ready for it we will work it into the evening much, much earlier instead of just before bed. By realizing what the root of her tears and door slamming was all about it really did allow her to move forward and feel comfortable and happy with her ability to work through things. One more way to boost that confidence and leave the anxiety at the door.

At night we do our nightly affirmations and Sydney has 6 things that she reaffirms every night:

I am strong

I am loved

I am supported

I am healthy

I am smart

I am beautiful

Just before she turns the world off for the night it helps to have her reassure herself of all the wonderful qualities she possesses. These change sometimes but either way what a great way to bring in a peaceful evening thought.

In honour of mental health awareness week I’m doing another give away. Have you ever heard of the “Iris the Dragon” Series of  books? Author Gayle Grass has written a number of books to help children with their feelings of anxiety, bipolar and more recently and anti-stigma book. I have a copy of her book “Hole in One” a children’s book dealing with the topic of  Anxiety Disorder to give away.  All you need to do is tell us what affirmations you could use with your child. Give us 5 that would help to empower your son or daughter.

Contest closes May 30th, 2011.

Contest closes on April 30th, 2011 – Avril Webster

Just a reminder to get your submissions is to win the wonderful books by Avril Websters’s – Off we Go series. Here’s the recap of my post from the other day. Enjoy and share your experience with us!

First off a big thank you to Danette from the Best of the Best” website. If you have a chance please click over to the site for some wonderful resources.

As you all know I love finding authors and books that can help parents with making life a little bit easier. Realizing that simple things to everyone else isn’t such the case with all children. It is my pleasure to have been asked to review a series of books by a mother of three children; one of which includes a son with special needs. The Off We Go! series by Avril Webster prepares children for everday experiences like going the grocery store, going for a haircut and going to the dentist. All of these experiences in our household have at some point or another proven to cause many tears for fear of the unknown of each of these ventures.

In each of these three books “Off We Go to the Dentist”, “Off We Go to the Grocery Store” and “Off We Go for a Haircut” Avril makes a point to suggest that certain things may be uncomfortable “and that’s okay”.

In “Off We Go to the Grocery Store” it reads, “It is very bright and noisy and busy! It’s okay!”. “Off We Go to the Dentist” reads, “The dentist lightly touches my teeth and counts them – “One, two, three..” It tastes a little funny but it’s okay.” In the book “Off We Go for a Haircut” the wording again is very comforting and encouraging by saying, “The hairdresser dries my hair with a hairdryer. It blows warm air and makes a loud noise. It will be over soon.” Each of these situations help the child to understand what is expected to happen and if it’s a little uncomfortable or anxiety provoking it’s okay!

I love the way Avril uses such bright illustration and a simple story that keeps the readers engaged. The books also very much allow for those “what if” discussion that sometimes happen.

I applaud Avril for taking the initiative to create something that helps readers imagine being in that moment. Remember life is all about possibilities and seeking out our full potential.

Avril Webster has been kind enough to donate these three books so three of you lucky readers of the blog have a chance to win them. Who doesn’t like a giveaway?

If you’d like the chance to win one of these wonderful books here’s the details!

Simply send me an email and let us know which everyday experience is a bit tricky for your family. I can send your answers along to Avril. Who knows maybe your idea is next in line in the series.

CONTEST CLOSES ON APRIL 30TH, 2011 . Open to all US & Canadian residence.
