“It’s normal for children to be anxious or fearful about any new situation, whether it’s starting a new school, riding the bus for the first time or meeting a new teacher,” said child psychologist Abbe Garcia, PhD, of the Pediatric Anxiety Research Clinic at the Bradley Hasbro Children’s Research Center (BHCRC). “Older children may be nervous about academic performance or making new friends. The most important thing parents can do is acknowledge the child’s anxiety, find out exactly what it is that he or she is worried about, and offer reassurance.”
