With a character more functional than Dustin Hoffman’s in “Rain Man,” the less complex but still resonant “Adam” enjoys an advantage. We know something is off with its namesake character from the beginning, but we also see him living life normally to some extent, if a little different from everyone surrounding him.
It’s that dual nature of “Adam” that intrigues from the start —– and with a good story surrounding the characters, “Adam” allows us to stay involved throughout, even if many of us were only vaguely familiar with Asperger’s syndrome before we sat down.
Some level of social anxiety is often present, and with Adam, played in the film by Hugh Dancy, we see that anxiety even as we see him try gamely to function in the world. He lives alone in an apartment, and he has a job that requires analytical skills. As is true of many people with the condition, Adam is extremely intelligent in such areas as science. When he speaks to others, though, he struggles between saying what he really thinks in any given situation, and what he knows he should say in the name of propriety.
