Such a pleasant surprise

Nothing can stand in the face of a person who is self disciplined and possesses willpower.

I don’t know about you but the cold weather always plays havoc with our morning routine. Inevitably someone is unhappy about the way the snowpants feel, the gloves are still not dry, the hat falling down. Years ago I read a book called, “The highly sensitive child” by Elaine N. Aron and at the time Sydney was a textbook case. Things have changed since then and it seems now that Ehren is fitting in the category of highly sensitive than Sydney.

So this morning Sydney had to wear her brothers snow pants because the zipper broke on her pants after school yesterday. I went out everywhere to find her new pants and to no avail, so she was stuck wearing Ehren’s. She had my mitts because her own mitts were not quite warm enough for the -30 degree weather that we had this morning. I thought for sure this change of everything would cause problems but much to my surprise she finished breakfast and nearly raced to get dressed. She suited herself up from top to bottom and was ready to embrace the frigid outdoors.

Ehren on the other hand was not so keen and everything went wrong for him this morning. After 15 minutes of shuffling and stuffing, poking and pulling we were out the door. The normal route to school is slightly difficult to overcome due to the large snowbanks that we must trapse over before getting to the sidewalk. This morning I decided that we’d go the other way so here I go again changing the routine. Hmm…I thought to myself that this could work to my disadvantage but Sydney took the change in stride and really set the pace for our walk.

I was happy to see that they were letting the kids inside right away and no one had to wait in the cold but this again puts a bit of a change in our plans. We walked into the school and stood there for a second and in my mind I was figuring out what to do. I really shouldn’t be in the school but I figured that the teacher on duty that brings her inside would probably have his hands full and wouldn’t be able to get her. Before I had much of a chance to think Sydney looked at me and said, “It’s okay Mommy. I can go upstairs by myself.” Reddish cheeks from the cold and all she was ready for this next challenge and she embraced it. I didn’t mean to doubt her choice and before I knew it I said, “Are you sure?”. “Yup, oh ya hug first”. She gave me a big hug and off she went without looking back.
