A big challenge ahead…

Over the last few months our daughter has made huge leaps and bounds. She has proven to us time and time again, sometimes in little ways and sometimes in big ways just how much our efforts are paying off. We are so proud of her accomplishments. So what’s the next step? We’re moving! How’s that for biting off more than we may be able to chew. For a number of reasons we have decided to move. The house is officially sold and another has been bought but now comes the huge hurdle of convincing the kids (primarily our daughter) that this is a good thing and that change is good.

New school, new house, new room, new surroundings. I’m hoping that this move will bring a fresh new start for all of us. The one lesson I’ve learned so far is to be honest about everything that’s going on. When we had to purge through the boxes of toys and books before our open house I explained that we’d be boxing things up just for a little while and asked if she’d like to help and her reply was, “No, I want you to do it when I’m not home.” So, I did and she was happy to see the end product. One step at a time and understanding that this is a monumental event for all of us. Let’s hope between now and the end of the summer my view on this being a good idea survives the move.

Thought for the Day…

I found ths quote this morning while looking on the net and it really does make so much sense. I wish this message could go out to all the people who deal with children that just need that little bit more.

“If a child can’t learn the way we teach, maybe we should teach the way they learn.”

 Ignacio Estrada quotes

Not quite the way I expected

So I started this blog and figured every day I would be able to at least type a few lines and give people something good to read. Instead I have been living in stomach flu hell and all my good intentions have been temporarily uprooted.

I should start by introducing FKMAD and let you know a little bit about the upcoming meeting in May. I was looking for a support group for parents of children with Social Anxiety and in a nutshell could find nothing. So if you can’t find it…create it. I found through the wonderful internet a non-profit organization called “FKMAD” (families of kids with mood and anxiety disorders). Their philosophy on helping the family as a whole and being a resource for support is exactly what I wanted to acheive. I took on the responsibility of being the first group in Ontario. The intention is to meet every month or so and have an open forum for parents/caregivers so that they are able to find resources, friendship and a sense of strength. Your child does not have to have a firm diagnosis either; if you suspect any signs of anxiety, depression, OCD, bipolar disorder or any other mood disorder you are more than, welcome.

Let’s face it raising children is never easy…especially when other issues are involved. So please think about coming to our meeting and if you have a chance check out FKMAD’s site at www.fkmad.org.

Welcome to my Blog

Thank you for stopping by the Blog. In the next few weeks many things will be posted and written here and it is all very new and exciting.

Our daughter was diagnosed with Social Anxiety Disorder back in 2005. Raising children is always a challenge but when you have a wonderful child that is just not adjusting to the world and you know that everyday life is a struggle you become an advocate for your child. Our daughter has come a very long way since than but that wouldn’t have happened without the wonderful help of a number of people. Between us the parents, the speech and language therapists, occupational therapists, family counsellor, cognitive behavioural therapist and well you get the idea, without these wonderful people we would not be where we are today. As a result of our good and bad experiences and our fight for what was right for our daughter I started 2008 off with a mission. I am sure that we are not the only family in the Greater Toronto Area who is dealing with the issues that we are; in fact I know we aren’t. Support for families and caregivers is so crucial for everyone’s survival and that’s exactly what I intended to do. This Blog is hopefully going to give parents/caregivers a chance to get together and share resources, success stories, obstacles and anything else that we feel we need to express.

Good things are to come…and I can’t wait!
